James 2:8-9, “If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: 9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.”
During the time of Christ, it was common for the scribes and Pharisees to argue over which of the laws in the Old Testament was the most important. One day they tried to drag Christ into this same argument, but His response left them amazed. He stated, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.”
More than likely, they nodded their heads in agreement, then turned to continue their argument. Then Christ continued, “And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” No doubt this would have caught them off guard. Because he stated that this was just as important as loving God.
When we love people around us, we are realistically fulfilling the commandment to love God. Do you love the Lord? Then this love will be manifest by your love for those around you. So let your light shine by demonstrating compassion, care and concern to all men.
